The Qathet region is gearing up for its third region-wide power outage, scheduled for Sunday, June 7th, from 8 am to 8 pm. This planned outage is part of the Jervis Inlet and Agamemnon Channel Power Line Replacement Project, which aims to upgrade the power system serving approximately 14,000 customers in Powell River and surrounding communities. BC Hydro emphasizes the necessity of this work for the safety of its crews and the public.
While the last outage on May 24th was seen as an opportunity for people to disconnect and enjoy outdoor activities, this time around, businesses are stepping up to provide entertainment and sustenance during the power outage. Step Above restaurant, located above Quality Foods on Joyce Avenue, will offer a breakfast and lunch menu with free coffee from 32 Lakes and Bakery, from 8 am to 8 pm. Rosemary Lane & Co., a food truck at Westview Harbour, will be open from 8 am, serving fresh coffee, muffins, cookies, breakfast sandwiches, bowls, and pitas.
Forest Bistro and Lounge, owned by John and Jessica, is hosting a Black Out BBQ from 3 to 7 pm, featuring slow-cooked pork-back ribs with maple baked beans, creamy potato salad, cornbread, and pickles. Five dollars from every barbecue plate will go to local salmon enhancement projects, and $1 from every draft beer will support the Powell River Salmon Society. Townsite Brewing's patio and beer garden will also be open from 1 to 8 pm, offering live music and cash-only beverages.
The Powell River Farmers' Market will operate as usual from 12:30 to 2 pm, accepting cash and farmers' market bucks through Interact or visa payments. Anyone planning events during the outage can contact Tanya to be added to the event list.
Despite the inconvenience, the community is rallying together, offering alternatives and support. This outage presents an opportunity for residents to explore local businesses and engage in community activities, fostering a sense of resilience and connection in the face of temporary power disruptions.
